These search terms can be low competition and low volume, but high converting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, search engine gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s the theory anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Granted, it doesn\u2019t always work like that. Most often they are between 3 to 5 words, although they can be longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They should also be niche specific, effectively narrowing down a search to a focused result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, \u201choliday home\u201d is a very broad search term, with 33,000 monthly searches (according to Ahrefs &#8211; Keywords Everywhere says 135,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, \u201cHoliday home rental Tuscany\u201d brings in a much lower search volume, essentially under 100 searches a month (or 480 if you ask Keywords Everywhere).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, now we\u2019re talking to people who are looking for a very specific thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This form of long tail keyword normally revolves around your main search terms, or head keywords. Simply take your main search term and add a modifier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another good example of a long tail keyword is a question, or other more specific enquiry. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhere is the best town for walking holidays in Tuscany?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhen is the best time to visit Tuscany?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDoes Tuscany have nice beaches?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you might notice from these search terms, long tail keywords can be questions &#8211; in fact this can be a very good way to find them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although these search phrases don\u2019t contain the main keyword, they do imply a specific intent from your audience. And being less competitive, you stand a better chance of ranking higher in the search engine results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can also be useful for focusing on voice activated searches. You\u2019re eliminating the huge volume of searches for the general keyword, and focusing instead on people who are, most likely, in the deep research or decision stage of their purchasing journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that long tail keywords are well suited to paid search results, such as Google Ads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long tail search terms are also great for organic rankings. Although of course, there is the challenge of ranking for your search term, and the time scale involved. But paying for those long tail keywords means you can quickly hit top spot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broad search terms offer their own pros and cons. In general, if you\u2019re trying to watch your budget (and who isn\u2019t), broad search terms are much better suited to organic search. Although there is a whole other problem with competition for rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So for those 33,000 searches for \u201choliday homes\u201d, you\u2019ll be competing with tourism behemoths like Airbnb and Booking.com. Which also means you\u2019ll be paying big bucks to appear in the rankings for a high competition and high volume keyword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;So adding a location, season or value modifier can help to narrow down the searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cSummer holiday home Italy\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cChristmas holiday villa near Florence\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHoliday home deals Italy\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cFamily vacation homes near Siena\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you\u2019ll still be competing with the big guns. But\u2026. You\u2019ll be thinning down the search volume and you\u2019ll be targeting specific searches, and therefore people who (theoretically at least) know what they\u2019re looking for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that is long tail keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you find them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-find-long-tail-keywords\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_find_long_tail_keywords\"><\/span>How to find long tail keywords<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is actually no mystery to finding long tail keywords &#8211; you just gotta know where to look. There is no getting around that it all comes down to some digital marketing basics such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding your target audience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researching your competition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An awareness of the language used to find your product or service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all marketing prep techniques that come pretty much as standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you find those long tail search terms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"search-modifiers\">Search modifiers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we saw above, standard search terms, or your head keywords, make a good foundation for your long tail keywords. Adding modifiers such as value or seasonal add-ons can help to turn your broad search term into a long tail search term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are usually common search modifiers, helping people to find a specific solution to their query.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example \u201ccheap\u201d, \u201cbest\u201d, \u201csale\u201d or \u201csummer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBest womens running shoes\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCheap fireplace surround\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWinter vacation deals Mexico\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"answer-a-question\">Answer a question<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another great way to find those long tail keywords is to provide the answer to common questions related to your industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, we saw these above. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhere is best for a family vacation in Costa Rica?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHow long does it take to learn Japanese?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhich car has the best fuel economy?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself what the common (or less common) questions are around your industry and you have a good list of long tail keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to think of any, a very useful keyword research tool is <a href=\"https:\/\/answerthepublic.com\/\">Answer the Public<\/a>. This helps you visualise questions related to certain search terms. It\u2019s a free tool with some useful paid features and definitely worth trying out if you\u2019re doing any keyword research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"use-google\">Use Google<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you search Google, they actually add some useful suggestions around the search results page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, you often have the featured snippets section, or the \u2018People also ask\u2019. You can click on these queries to then see even more results and suggested long tail searches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"use-google-s-tools\">Use Google\u2019s tools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Google is obviously happy to load you up with free tools to get you researching and ready to spend big bucks on your ad campaigns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, they have a number of free keyword research tools, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/\">Google Trends<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ads.google.com\/intl\/en_uk\/home\/tools\/keyword-planner\/\">Keyword Planner<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Search Console<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these offer some useful insight into user searches, allowing you to dig deep for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about keyword research in our in-depth guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"use-keyword-research-tools\">Use keyword research tools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of keyword research tools grows longer by the day. But the truth is, they\u2019re worth the price of the subscription.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top tier tools are packages like Ahrefs, SEM Rush, Majestic and Moz. These allow you to conduct some deep research into your search traffic and your competitors, and are, frankly, essential for serious marketers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t quite bring yourself to shell out $99 (at least) each month, there are some cheaper options like <a href=\"https:\/\/longtailpro.com\/\">Long Tail Pro<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kwfinder.com\/\">KW Finder<\/a> that might be worth checking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.neilpatel.com\/\">UberSuggest<\/a> also offers a limited free package as well as some nicely priced \u2018lifetime\u2019 packages which can be very useful if you\u2019re just running one website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"go-deep-on-social-media\">Go deep on social media<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of any keyword research, social media can be a goldmine. If you can avoid getting too distracted&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can block out the baby spam, memes and temptation to start trolling people, here is how to use social media to find keywords:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Search products or terms associated with your industry. Make a note of what questions people are asking, what is being shared, complaints and any other relevant social activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your competitors social media pages to see what they\u2019re sharing or how their customers are interacting with them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search your obvious hashtags, and take note of other related hashtags or terms that you might not already be using.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"ppc-vs-seo\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PPC_vs_SEO\"><\/span>PPC vs SEO<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefit of long tail keywords is that they can be used to target a specific segment of search traffic &#8211; people at a particular point in their journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this doesn\u2019t limit you to paid traffic or organic traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing to say that you shouldn\u2019t target both. In fact, it\u2019s recommended that you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your new found spreadsheet of long tail keywords, create a list of content (blogs, social media posts, videos etc) that you can create to target these searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, while waiting for that traffic to come in via organic search (which can take aaaaaages), you can hit the SERPs with your paid ads too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to have well structured landing pages for your search terms. But, alas, you\u2019d be wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those broad search terms, with high volume and relatively low conversions \u2018Holiday home\u2019\/\u2019marketing tools\u2019, actually tend to be cheaper than long tail keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Keywords Everywhere for my data here, the search terms for holiday homes look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Holiday home: <strong>vol, 110,000 cost $0.98<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holiday home Tuscany: <strong>vol, 480 cost $3.10<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Villas for rent in Italy:  <strong>vol, 5,400 cost $2.95<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Get specific, pay more per click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is due to the increased likelihood of a conversion from these keywords. After all, these are searches near the money end of the funnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping your ad campaigns targeted is one of the best ways to keep costs down and to minimise your exposure to click fraud. In fact, many professional PPC managers won\u2019t run any campaigns that target broad search terms precisely because of the low conversions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you\u2019re paying less per click. But you do end up paying much more per conversion, with the volume of clicks to win one new customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add to this the risk of click fraud on broad search terms, and it\u2019s an obvious strategy to go for the lower volume clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wait-click-what\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wait%E2%80%A6_Click_what\"><\/span>Wait&#8230; Click what??<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah yes, click fraud. It\u2019s become uncomfortably clear to pretty much anyone in digital marketing that click fraud is an issue. In fact it&#8217;s a multi-billion dollar issue and one that doesn\u2019t seem to be going anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply, click fraud is any non-genuine click on your paid ads. For example, structure your ad campaigns to target people who are researching your product and those that are looking to buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research focused terms will most likely be things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Where is the best\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I find\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can I do\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Purchase focused search terms will most likely look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Best value\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(search term) with free shipping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(search term) with free trial<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Obviously not an exhaustive list, just a serving suggestion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these focused campaigns, you\u2019ll need well written ad copy that answers these questions and speaks to the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will also be more beneficial to create landing pages designed to speak directly to these long tail queries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People searching for \u201cWhere is the best place in Italy for a family vacation\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure your landing page with your family friendly villas in Tuscany pops!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"long-tail-keywords-in-seo\">Long tail keywords in SEO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hitting those long tail keywords in a blog is also a great idea. Effective SEO is a whole other subject, but there is no harm in creating blog posts that target the same audience you\u2019re targeting with your paid campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true for competitive search terms or phrases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organic search results do cost money and time (writing up the posts, researching, optimising and generating a buzz on your social media pages).
